Weather Summary

Tim Roche
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 09, 2008.

Low pressure will move up the Appalachian mountains on Friday bringing cloud cover and rain to the Northeast. This storm system is the same one that caused an outbreak of severe weather across the southern Appalachian on Thursday. Severe weather isn't expected to be as much of a problem on Friday since the system's cold front will have passed off the Carolina coast by early afternoon, but a few early thunderstorms could contain gusty winds. Further north, heavy rain is anticipated across the Mid-Atlantic interior, and flood watches have been posted from northern Virginia through Long Island.

The southern Appalachians could also see another round of intense thunderstorms on Friday, but a widespread outbreak of damaging weather is unlikely.

In the Northern Rockies, wet weather is anticipated on Friday as a weak trough moves through Canada. Rain is anticipated across Idaho Montana and Wyoming early in the day, with precipitation spreading into the Dakotas by evening. In the northern portions of the region and in some of the high elevations of the Rockies snow is possible. Heavy accumulation snow is unlikely except for the highest elevations.

In the West, a weak ridge will build over the Pacific coast on Friday bringing clear skies to the region. Clouds will remain in place along the West Coast, and temperatures several miles inland will remain cool. In the interior of California highs should remain close to normal.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at International Falls, Minn. to a high of 104 degrees at Laredo, Texas.

Cyclone Nargis death toll may top 100,000

Dr. Jeff Masters

The tragedy of Cyclone Nargis' aftermath in Myanmar continues to intensify, with the top U.S. diplomat in the county now predicting a death toll of 100,000. A death toll of 80,000 has been estimated by a local official in just one district of the country--Labutta--so the death toll may go much higher than 100,000. Although the first major U.N. relief flight of emergency supplies has finally landed, the criminal indifference of the nation's leaders towards the plight ...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On this date in 1985, lightning struck a tree 150 yards away from an Alabama house. The power surge then followed the driveway to the house, blowing up all its electrical outlets. As the bolt traveled to the basement, it blew a large hole in the floor.
