Weather Summary

Shaun Tanner
Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, July 18, 2008.

Severe weather swept through New England on Friday. A low pressure system over the Great Lakes produced a warm front that extended into Maine, which triggered scattered storms. Penny size hail was reported in Naples, Maine and it was reported that strong winds blew down a flag pole in Waltham, Vermont. These storms were associated with strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail, but tornadoes have not yet been reported.

The low pressure system over the Great Lakes produced another front that extended into the Central Plains on Friday. The front kicked up some scattered showers and thunderstorms that extended from Iowa into northern Texas, but these storms have not yet been severe.

To the south, an area of low pressure off the coast of the coast of Georgia and Florida brought scattered showers and thunderstorms to the region on Friday. A small region of showers produced from this system extended along the East Coast from North Carolina to northern Florida.

To the West, a small low pressure system triggered scattered showers over the Central Rockies on Friday. California saw mostly clear skies with the exception of morning coastal fog and low clouds which diminished throughout the day. Partly cloudy skies covered the Pacific Northwest as a trough of low pressure hovered over the region.

The Southwest saw high level showers and thunderstorms on Friday produced by a high level trough that extended into the region. Thus, flooding continued to cause issues in dessert areas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday have ranged from a morning low of 33 degrees at San Nicolas Island, Calif to a midday high of 108 degrees at Thermal, Calif.

Area off of GA/SC looking healthier, Invest 94L still sputtering, Bertha revived

Dr. Jeff Masters

Things still remain busy in the tropics (at least for July). The area that was over the western Caribbean yesterday -- Invest 95L for those keeping track -- is now over Central America and no longer poses a significant threat of development. Now in the central Caribbean, Invest 94L is continuing to play games with us by first looking like it wants to develop and then fading away. Closer to home, Invest 96L is looking more organized and could develop in a tropical dep...
